Gionee Elife S5.1 Hands-on and First Impressions

Gionee might not be a household name, yet, but the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is leaving no stones unturned to become one. The Elife E7, for instance, impressed us with its hardware and camera. While even the earlier products like the E5 offered a great set of specs under a reasonable price bracket. Company is now following it up by introducing the second smartphone in its forte of slim smartphones with the Elife S5.1 being the second off the block. The device was recently launched in India and here are our first impressions of one of the slimmest smartphone in the world, which is also recognized by Guinness Book of World Records.

Gionee Elife S5.1 - Design

The Elife S5.1 comes with toned-down specs, as it sports a 4.8-inch 720p AMOLED display, comparing to the 5-inch 1080p display seen on the S5.5, its predecessor. The device comes powered with a 1.7GHz Octa-core processor complimented by a 1GB of RAM and Mali-450MP4. The S5.1 runs on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS layered with company’s Amigo UI 2.0, which is the kind of a buzz kill for performance. Nonetheless, the device still takes multitasking very easily.

The device features an 8MP Autofocus rear shooter with LED flash, while the device features a 5MP snapper at the front. It has onboard storage of 16GB out of which around 10GB was available to use. It packs 2050mAh battery, which gave a decent amount of battery life over the day. While carrying out complex tasks and gaming will definitely lower the battery life of the device.

Considering that specs on S5.1 are not high-end, the device still feels premium in handling. The real catch on this device is its light weight and good looks, which will almost remind you of the iPhone. Though, Gionee didn’t forget to consider the basic engineering of designing the slim smartphone. Unlike we have seen in the case of iPhone 6 Plus, which is prone to bending. Making a smaller display than S5.5 actually helped the company to not create the bending issues with the S5.1.

Now coming to the design aesthetics, it sports a metallic frame and glass body at just 5.1mm thickness. On the right edge, there is an SIM card slot, which can hold a single microSIM card once the tray is popped out. While on the left side, there are volume rocker keys and power buttons. The top edge is left emptied, but you can find earphone jack and microUSB at the bottom edge, as well as primary microphone. On the front top, the device has sensors; earpiece and camera module installed. While on the front bottom, there are capacitive touch buttons for menu, home, and back operations. At the back of the device, there is a camera module with flash at the top, whereas the loudspeakers are found at the bottom.

Early Verdict

The device has a pretty decent hardware specs sheet, but considering there are many options available in the market for smartphone consumers, who can easily spend around INR 20K. Its competitors are quite few if you take slimness as the base, while considering the overall package; Gionee S5.1 is not worth INR 20K pricing. But arguably it might be the best-designed smartphone in this range.

Flipkart Is All Set For The Big Billion Day, Are You?

Competitive pricing has been one of the strong points of online stores. Deals are going to get even better this week, as India’s biggest online retailer Flipkart is geared-up to kick-off the Big Billion Day sale just in time for the festive season. The company will be offering everything from bulbs to beds at a discounted price.
The Flipkart sale will start on October 13 with focus on fashion category. Next day will be dedicated to home appliances. 15 is reserved for mobile phones and accessories, followed by electronics and automotive. The last day will be targeted at book lovers. So mark your calendars, and keep your wish list ready.
big billion day
The only not-so-exciting thing about the sale is that it is not accessible via desktop website. However, for killer deals, we think it is fine to put up with the app for five days.
While there is no denying that Flipkart offered excellent deals last year, the shopping experience wasn’t good at all. Due to the insane surge in the traffic, Flipkart ran into numerous technical glitches and logistic nightmares. Things wouldn’t go haywire this time around though, as Flipkart has been training its partners for quite a while.
If in case, you don’t find your favourite product on Flipkart. You have other options such as Amazon who would be hosting Great Indian Festive Sale fromOctober 13 to 17. Yes, it coincides with the Big Billion Days sale. Best thing about Amazon is that the company will not be limiting its offers to the app platform. So yes, you don’t have to leave your trustworthy desktop/laptop to grab the discounts.

With operations over 20 countries across Asia and Africa, Airtel has built a platform on which smartphone users can experience the OnePlus 2. Customers who are willing to upgrade their existing SIM card for an Airtel 4G SIM or even opting for a new Airtel 4G connection stand a chance to grab a OnePlus 2 invite which can be used to purchase the smartphone. But the invites are limited and will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis. Starting with Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, the offer is expected to roll out to other cities soon.

As per the specifications, the OnePlus 2 features a 5.5-inch Full HD display, 13-megapixel rear camera, 4GB RAM, dual-SIM support and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The flagship killer comes with a price a tag of INR 24,999. This new initiative will attract more users which might prove fruitful for the company in the long run. Starting tomorrow (Friday, September 4), OnePlus fans will be able to easily experience the OnePlus 2 across 50 Airtel stores in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

Leaked: Huawei Nexus 2015

Huawei made Nexus has just surfaced online ahead of the IFA 2015. The leaked image clearly shows the branding of the Chinese multinational company with a possible fingerprint sensor and microphone at the back of the device. As per the leaks, the smartphone features a metal back panel with a USB Type-C port at the bottom. Previous leaks also claimed that the Huawei Nexus 2015 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch QHD display and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset.

Recent leaks have cemented the fact that the device will come with a 5.7-inch screen, Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3GB of RAM and a 3,500 mAh battery. Moreover, the device is expected to come with a 21-megapixel rear camera. If the following leak turns out to be true then we might see the device shipping with 64GB of eMMC 5.1 onboard storage. The image also shows that there is a dual-LED flash at the rear and stereo front-facing speakers similar to the Moto devices. On the software front, the smartphone is expected to run the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow which might just be announced prior to the launch of both the Huawei and LG Nexus smartphones.

Just like the leaked LG model the Huawei variant also portraits a similar fingerprint scanner which indicates that Google might have created a common design for both the Nexus variants. For the time being, there is no word on any official announcements as well as the pricing. The Huawei Nexus is due to be announced in October alongside the LG Nexus launch.

The device has an 8 MP camera with Full HD video recording. Just like the display, the non-removable battery is also quite large, at 3050 mAh.

Nokia set to launch a device on July 11 that’ll reinvent zooming

Nokia event EOS

Nokia likes to tease and this time they’ve sent out press invites for a 11 July event in New York. As you can see, Nokia is planning on reinventing ‘zooming’. The words “Zoom Reinvented” are highlighted across the top with the words “see more from Nokia” down below. The magnifying glass makes it at all more obvious. If all the leaks around the web are to be believed, then at this Nokia event we’ll be seeing a Nokia EOS device, probably touting a 41-megapixel camera.

Our memories and we hope yours too, haven’t forgotten Nokia’s mind-boggling cameraphone – 808 PureView that had a massive 41-megapixel sensor which allowed users to zoom on an image with no loss of quality. Well, looks like Nokia is about to again show us that kind of innovation and we’re excited to see what it will look like.

Samsung makes Galaxy S4 Zoom official: 16-megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom

Finally, Samsung has announced the all-new Galaxy S4 Zoom. Much like the Galaxy S4 ‘Active’ variant was water proof, this variant of S4 features a huge 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with 10x optical zoom and a Xenon flash on the back.

GALAXY S4 zoom

The cameraphone comes with a ‘zoom ring’ on the back of the phone that you can twist to instantly share images and this can be done while making a phone call too, thus letting you send an image directly via MMS to whoever you are talking with. The Zoom Ring also allows a faster way to boot up the camera and scroll through all its features. There are no hardware buttons for the camera, it’s all controlled with digital one’s.

Samsung has included a software add-on called photo suggest which connects the user to a big online library of images taken by other photographers around the globe and it can even suggest you to the best location to take a picture. For the camera, there are 25 Smart Modes, focal length, face detection and other tweaks to play around.

Last year, Samsung brought a similar device named ‘Galaxy Camera’, but this year, the S4 Zoom will be able make calls  and also support LTE. The huge sensor makes the Zoom quite bulky at 125.5 x 63.5 x 15.4 mm and 208g of weight. As for the specifications, it has a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540) Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, 1.5GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The RAM is chopped own to 1.5GB RAM and considering it’s a camerphone, it comes only with 5GB usable internal memory. So you’ll have to expand it (upto64GB) with microSD card. The S4 Zoom will come with a 2,3300mAh battery.

There’s no official word on pricing or the availability. We expect the details to revealed at Samsung Premier 2013 event in London on June 20th.

BlackBerry Messenger might be arriving to Android and iOS on June 27

Last month, we told you that BlackBerry Messenger App was headed to Android and iOS. But the company had declined to give out a official launch date at that time.

bbm for android and ios

Today, we have a probable launch date. An unofficial BlackBerry Twitter account, @bbworldwid tweeted that BBM will be coming to Android and iOS on June 27, 2013. The tweet shows a picture of BBM splash screen app on an iPhone.

The Android app will run on devices with Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or above and iOS app will run on iOS 6 or above. Initially, users would be able to use multi-person chats, as well as have the ability to share photos and voice notes, and engage in BBM Groups, which allows BBM customers to create groups of up to 30 people. The company plans to add some of the new BBM features such as Voice and video calls, Screenshare, and Channels through future updates.

BBM on Android and the iPhone would be free to download. The company is entering the cross-messaging platform race quite late with rivals apps like WhatsApp, WeChat and Google Hangouts already ruling on all platforms. We’ll have to wait and see how it stacks up against the competitors.

It will come with 32GB of built-in storage. Just like other Nexus devices, even this one will receive timely software updates.

Best Smartphones Available in India under Rs. 10,000 – May 2013

Thankfully, in 2013, we now have a lot of affordable smartphones that are worthy to buy and these are selling like hot cakes. Today, we present you a list of best smartphones you can buy for under Rs. 10,000. Before we begin, let me inform you that for price below 10k, there are more than 90 smartphones available to choose from. Our list below has been compiled to ease that gruesome task of selection, and phones have been short-listed on the basis of a combination of multiple features like latest operating system, battery life, speed, storage options, manufacturer’s reliability etc.

Best phones under Rs 10000

Two weeks back we saw the launch of Xolo Q700 and the smartphone has already made it to our list of recommended buy. Lava’s brand ‘Xolo’ stands for providing premium Android experience at affordable prices. And the Indian manufacturer offers the same with Xolo Q700. For an affordable price, you get a power-packed quad-core processor coupled with 1GB RAM, latest OS – Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, a 4.5-inch qHD OGS IPS display (~245ppi) and lastly a 2400mAh battery to keep it running for long. The device comes preloaded with three premium apps – Xolo Switch, Xolo Secure and Xolo Power. Xolo Switch allows users to create up to 4 profiles with different lock screens, apps and wallpapers. Xolo Secure features enterprise level security features like control by single SMS, remotely lock and wipe phone data, cloud backup for SMS and call log, alerts on SIM change, remote lock and track device location. Xolo Power offers longer usage of battery by synchronizing the data consumption and comes with a Night mode to reduce power consumption. It also allows to detect and kill background apps by a single click and real time CPU load analysis. A power-packed smartphone for a power-user? Yes, definitely!

Xolo Q700

Key specifications: Android v4.2 Jelly Bean, 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A7 quad-core processor + 1GB RAM, 4.5-inch IPS display with 540 x 960p resolution (245 PPI pixel density), 4GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB, 5MP rear camera flash, 0.3 MP front camera, Video recording – 720p, 2400 mAh battery

Price: Rs. 9,999

Who should buy?

The xolo Q700 has made it to the top of the list, because this is the most preferred choice of Android phone under 10K with the best specs and a powerful quad-core processor. But if you’re more conscious about the brand of the phone, then you can checkout Sony Xperia E listed below or the Windows Phone 8 based Nokia Lumia 520. If not the brand, but the screen size of the phone matters to you, then you can instead opt for the Micromax A110.

Sony Xperia E

Sony’s last year models in this price range like the Xperia Mini, Xperia Tipo have always been criticized for having small 3.0-inch displays, but they offered decent performance at pocket-friendly prices. In 2013, Sony gets the combination for a budget smartphone right with the ‘Xperia E’. It’s the right phone for Sony loyalists looking for an entry-level Android Jelly Bean smartphone. The Xperia E offers well-built hardware, decent performance and a comfortable 3.5-inch display. The camera performance is a tad average due to a meagre 3.15 MP sensor.

Sony Xperia E

Key specifications: Android v4.0.4 ICS (upgradable to v4.1.1 Jelly Bean), 1 GHz Cortex-A5 Qualcomm MSM7227A processor + 512 MB RAM, 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480p resolution (~165 ppi pixel density), 4GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB, 3.2 MP rear camera, 0.3 MP front camera, Video recording – 640 x 480 @ 30fps, 1530 mAh battery.

Price: Xperia E – Rs. 9,990 and Xperia E Dual – Rs. 10,990

Who should buy?

If you don’t require huge display smartphones and cannot satisfy your ego by owing a smartphone from a local manufacturer/vendor, then Xperia E is the smartphone you should be buying. But be ware, this is a smartphone for normal usage like social networking, web browsing, etc and doesn’t comes with powerful specs. It neither has a very good camera that can replace your regular digi cam.

Nokia Lumia 520

Nokia’s Lumia range of Windows Phone 8 smartphones have been appreciated for excellent hardware, vibrant displays, best cameras, ease-of-use OS and body color options. Nokia brings all that same experience to an affordable smartphone called ‘Lumia 520’. For the price point, you get a very good 4.0-inch display with scratch-resistant glass, sleek hardware, a well-performing 5MP camera, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 64GB) and decent battery life. The performance is smooth as with all Windows Phone 8 devices. The trade-offs Nokia did for making 520 affordable include no NFC, no camera flash and no front facing camera. Also, Windows Phone 8 is lacking some popular apps and games. If you’ll can live with these trade-offs, then Lumia 520 is an excellent entry-level Windows Phone 8 smartphone you should be buying. It’s available in yellow, red, cyan, white and black colors.

Nokia Lumia 520

Key specifications: Microsoft Windows Phone 8 OS, 1 GHz dual-core processor + 512 MB RAM, 4.0-inch IPS LCD display with 480 x 800p resolution (~233 ppi pixel density), 8GB internal storage expandable up to 64 GB, 5 MP rear camera, Video recording – 720p@30fps, 1430 mAh battery.

Price: Rs. 9,799

Who should buy?

If you can compromise with the much famed Android Operating system and want a cool and trendy looking smartphone with a simple to use interface, this windows phone 8 based smartphone would be a perfect choice.  Read more about various operating systems here.

Micromax Canvas 2 A110

Micromax has gained a lot of market share in India (3rd largest), all thanks to its much famed ‘Canvas’ series of smartphones. From the series, Canvas 2 A110 is our choice. The device is quite famous and had also been brought back on popular demand after it went out of stock in the market. The smartphone packs quite a punch for the affordable price. The pros include well-built hardware, 5.0-inch IPS display (~196 ppi) offers good colors, 8MP camera performs well in daylight and lastly good battery life (2000mAh). The cons include average performance when loaded with apps and only 2GB internal memory. If you’re looking for a well-made device with a large display, then Canvas 2 A110 is the phone you should be buying.

Micromax Canvas 2 A110

Key Specifications: Android v4.0.4 ICS (upgradable to v4.1.1 Jelly Bean),  1 GHz Dual-core Cortex-A9 MediaTek MT6577 processor + 512 MB RAM, 5.0-inch IPS LCD display with 480 x 854p resolution, 2GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB, 8MP rear camera with Dual LED Flash, 0.3MP front camera, Video recording – 480p@30fps, 2000 mAh battery

Price: Rs. 9,999

Who should buy?

We shall suggest you Micromax Canvas A110 only if you fancy large screen phones over a powerful processor or higher specs phone, and your budget is strictly constrained to Rs. 10,000.

Karbonn S1 Titanium

At first look, the features on Karbonn S1 Titanium resemble XOLO Q700. But the S1 came out first in the market as an affordable quad-core smartphone. It lives up to the promises of a fast phone and performs very well with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The device looks fairly okay due to it’s all plastic build. The 4.5-inch display (~245 ppi) produces good colors but has bad viewing angles. The 5MP camera too performs decent in daylight but disappoints with indoor shots. The 1600mAh battery provides average battery life. Summing it up, the S1 Titanium is a hit and miss device with everything performing average.

Karbonn S1 Titanium

Key Specifications: Android OS, v4.1 (Jelly Bean), 1.2 GHz quad-core processor + 1GB RAM, 4.5-inch IPS LCD display with 540 x 960p resolution, 4GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB, 5MP rear camera, VGA front camera, Video recording – 720p, 1600 mAh battery

Price: Rs. 9,999

Who should buy?

This is just another alternative to the Xolo Q700 with a good looking build but a disastrous battery of only 1600 mAh.

HTC One sales cross 5 million units since launch

Htc One India

The Taiwanese company might have faced various kinds of problems, but that hasn’t stopped their flagship device – HTC One from selling five million units in other countries where it is available.

An unnamed HTC executive said to Wall Street Journal that HTC has sold around 5 million One smartphones since its launch about a month ago, said . He further added,“Orders are pretty good so far and are still more than what we can supply. This is partly due to the shortage of components. When the issue is resolved next month, we will have a better idea if it’s doing really well or not,”

The One is HTC’s hope to raise the declining market share, and if they’re unable to cater with the ongoing production problems, it might lose the present share altogether. In India, too, the One was supposed to launch in April, but has been delayed for over a month now.

We advise you’ll to pre-order the smartphone from Flipkart. The One has received excellent reviews from reporters around the globe and is one-of-the best smartphones ever made. We hope the company resolves all the issues and are able to sell even more millions of units in India, very soon.
