Nokia announces Budget Music Phone – X1-01; Will soon launch C2-00

Nokia has officially announced a budget music phone, being the Nokia X1-01. This phone has similar features to another phone launched a few months back being the X1-00. The Nokia X1-01 is a dual-SIM phone with dual standby.

Other key features of this device include Mp3 player, Stereo FM radio, 3.5mm audio jack, dedicated music keys, torchlight and an expandable memory of upto 16GB with a 2GB card included in the package.

The Nokia X1-01 also has a 1320 mAh Li-Ion battery with an excellent standby time of 43 days and music playback of 36hrs.It even has a very impressive and loud speaker at the back and also comes in 5 colors being Red, Ocean Blue, Orange, Dark Grey and white.

This phone will be available later during this quarter in India, China, Eurasia, South-East Asia/Pacific region, the Middle East, Africa, and Brazil.

The price of Nokia X1-01 will be around Rs.2200 and it seems perfect for music lovers on a budget.

Nokia has even announced that it will launch another device along with the X1-01, being the C2-00. This device was announced in June 2010 and comes with features such as a VGA camera and a series 40 Operating system.It will be priced at around Rs.3000.Similar Posts:

Hardware / Design

This phone is slim with just 9.6mm thickness and easy to grip with both hands while typing and weighs 78 g. Due to its slim design this phone fits even into a tight jeans pocket.

The phone has a three row keypad instead of a four rows. On the first row there is call and end call button and Messaging and Music shortcut keys in between them. The last row keys are moved to right side which needs getting used to while typing 0 or spaces. There are no option or navi keys. Touch screen is used for navigating through menu and options.

There is a volume rocker on the left side of the phone and a lock / unlock button next to that. There is no camera button which is a disappointment .

On the top there is a 3.5mm audio jack , Micro USB connector slot which can even charge the phone when connected to a PC, charger connector. At the bottom there is a large speaker grill.

The back side of the phone has a metal back cover that comes out when the two locks at the bottom sides are pressed together. After removing the back cover you can see the 860 mAh battery and two slots, one for the memory card and one for the SIM card. 5MP camera at the back is just above the back cover.

Home Screen

After pressing the lock button and unlock on the screen it takes you to the home screen that is highly customizable. Just a long press on the home screen lets you personalize the home screen with widgets like clock, Radio and music, Mail, Shortcut bar,WLAN etc.

The Number of home widgets are limited to 4. There is a ‘Go to’ short cut on the left menu which opens into a grid view that lets you select the shortcuts. This is limited to 9 which shows icons of the shortcuts along with the name under that.

Just click the personalize view on the top and select the shortcut to be replaced. There is also home screen settings option next to that.

Contacts and Messaging

The contacts show the names in the contact list with images. There are also options to set speed dial for contacts, sync your contacts with you OVI account, contact groups, copy or move contact from phone memory to SIM card.

There is a messaging shortcut key next to call button which can be accessed even when you are doing some other thing which takes you into it. This lets you write a new message or takes you to inbox that is in the conversational view. Conversation, lists the messages based on contacts. You can also change that to normal inbox from the options.

Inside messaging there is Mail and Chat apps. There are various mail options to choose from, like Ovi Mail, Yahoo mail, Gmail, Hotmail etc. This also lets you choose the connectivity options via Wi-fi or mobile data. You can set it as do not ask to choose the default.

You can also set the how mail should load for each mail setup from the account settings like manual update, fast and very fast that loads automatically. The time span for mail alerts and signatures could also be set for each accounts. This does not use push email, so it takes some time for you to get notifications.

Chat services like Gtalk, Yahoo messenger, OVI and MSN are also available. The chats are categorized as conversations, online and offline.

You can hide the chat service so that it runs on the background and notifies you with alert message and tone for new chat messages. Your current status is also visible on home screen notification bar on the top.

Music, Video Player and Radio

The Music player looks like the one you see in other S40 handsets that shows all songs, based on artists, genres and option to create playlist.

The playback is good in the headset and loud enough while playing with the loudspeaker and headphones.

The album arts are shown in the background while playing the music. There are options like shuffle, repeat, equalizer that are common. There is also option to play the music via Bluetooth headset.

It plays 3GPP, MPEG-4 and WMV video formats.

The Radio with RDS auto tunes the radio stations. The stations could also be set manually by selecting the frequency.

The shortcut key for music next to messaging key controls both music and radio. This does not open music player or radio but only shows few option like play/ pause and skip to next or previous tracks / radio stations.

Connectivity and Browser

This phone has 3G that lets download and browse at greater speeds. This doesn’t have a front camera so you can’t make video calls.

There is Wi-Fi which lets you scan and store the Wi-Fi networks near you. This lets you use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data connection when you use applications.

There is Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP that lets you stream music and transfer files to other devices.

The Browser is the normal S40 browser that loads the page with the navigation and zoom features. It’s hard to browser whole web page in such a small screen so better use Opera Mini which is pre-installed.

There is OVI store which looks awesome in this phone with lots of features and there is also OVI browser that you can download from OVI store. It has Facebook, You-tube and other social networking shortcuts optimized for the phone.

Camera

This has a 5 MP camera which gives good pictures at 1944 x 2592 pixels. This has 4x digital zoom (use volume keys) . There is also landscape format for capturing images. Other camera features include self timer and effects. Since there is no flash, image looks average in low lighting conditions.

The video quality is average at 640 x 480 pixels. There is photo gallery with the option to view pictures even in the timeline mode.

Other basic features include Calendar, Alarm clock, Calculator, Converter and pre-installed games like Hip Hop Tournament, Climate Mission.

Sync with OVI lets you sync contacts, calendar and notes to your account online. Download Snaptu from OVI store and Foursquare from Nokia Beta labs that comes in handy.

Mobile Gyaan Verdict:

X3-02 is for those who is looking for a phone with good music, camera and messaging. Battery life is average, that lasts for 1.5 days on heavy usage with always on Wi-Fi and data and 2.5 days for normal usage. The phone is sleek and packed with features, but the small screen and S40 OS makes it hard to utilize all those features. Also the price could have been priced a bit less.

The current market price for the phone is Rs 8,400 and comes in three colors petrol blue, white silver and dark grey.Similar Posts:

Nokia “Shoot and Tag” app created by Nokia research center Beijing lets you creates chapters while you shoot videos. This lets you view exact part of the video easily during playback instead of fast forwarding.

Click the red record button in the app to record, pause or resume while shooting.

Inbuilt gallery to view the videos chapter wise.

Foursquare now on Nokia Series 40 Phones

Nokia released foursquare app for Symbian S60 phones last year in OVI store. Now Foursquare Java app is released for series 40 phones on Nokia beta labs. This app does not need in-built GPS because it uses mobile signal to find nearby places.

One such coder has brought along the inevitable wedding of Nokia and Android. Unbelievable? well, this video might help you believe it. Here you can see a Nokia N900 running Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread.

Hacking is Fun

Thanks to Alexey Roslyakov, an open source coder who also goes by the name DrunkDebugger (LOL, these geeks!). Alexey managed to port one of the newest versions of Android onto the N900 which Nokia likes to call a portable computer. As seen in the video its a pretty stable port. Though one cannot make calls or send SMS using this set up, the keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the sound seems to be functioning well. Who would have thought tinkering with ones phone can get him such fame.

Maemo

Similar porting has also been done on Nokia’s internet tablets(NITs) like the N800 and N810. This is possible because of the software platform – Maemo. Maemo is an open source operating system for high-end Nokia devices which is highly modifiable. A community of over 19,000 members is continuously working to develop new features and applications for this new OS. Apparently, a wee bit of tinkering can also allow other OS to be ported onto it.

Even though this isn’t an official collaboration between Nokia and Google, and the two don’t seem to be joining hands in the near future. For all of us who wanted to know what the Android would feel like on a Nokia device, here is the opportunity.

Nokia announced Nokia Instant Community last week that offers Nokia handset owners to communicate with people around them. This is developed by the students in Nokia Research Center in Tampere , Finland and helps you to communicate with nearby people even without using bluetooth or any cellular network. All it needs is Wi-fi enabled phones.

What do you need to use Nokia Instant Community?

You don’t need internet connection on your phone or Bluetooth. You need Wi-Fi enabled handset to connect to other devices.

What are the handsets supported?

Right now it is tested on Nokia N900 which runs on MeeGo and also some on the Symbian devices.

What are the features of Nokia Instant Community?

Create your own profile and chat with the other people around your who uses Nokia Instant Community on their device.
Browse the users by name, community and by profiles such as Party, Public etc.
Share contents like Blogs, songs, poem, images and videos to a profile or to a person and also share the contents posted by others and comment on them.
If you come across the same person several times then an alert flashes on the screen.
Share files with a person or download the files from other’s mobile phone easily.

Will it work only on Nokia Phones?

This was developed to work on all the phones but the decision to use it on other devices like Android is up to Nokia.

World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June every year so here are some of the applications to turn your phone green. Earlier, we have also posted some tips to save battery life of your mobile phone. These apps are for Nokia S60 v3 and v5 phones.

Nokia Energy Profiler

This app lets you to find the power consumption of your phone over a period of time. This is useful specially when you think your mobile’s battery drains soon and can’t find the reason for it. Run this application for some time with some other app in the background to find how much power is used when the particular app is running. This can also be used to mobile network coverage and internet connection speed on your phone. This is free of charge and can be downloaded from OVI store.

Green Charging Save Energy:

This app is very useful to save power when you forget to disconnect the charger after charging is complete. It generates sound alert after the charging is 100% complete. It also shows the battery standby and talk time. In addition to it, there are tips to save battery life. This app starts automatically when the phone is switched on and runs on the background. Previously this was free of charge, now you need to pay 1 Euro and can download it from OVI store.

Green Explorer

This app does not do anything to your phone but gives green tips. Login using your Nokia account and select your destination and get tips based on the place or add your own green tips. Partnered by top organisations like WWF and UNESCO. This app can be downloaded from Nokia green explorer website or via greenexplorer.nokia.com from your mobile phone browser.

Do not stop your green contribution by only installing these apps also recycle your phone properly since all the phones are now made of recyclable materials.

Skype is now Officially available for Symbian users

How do you converse with people far away from you ? You obviously must be using Skype, since it is free and the clarity is very good. Till yesterday, Skype was however, available only on your PC or laptop, but now Nokia and Skype have joined together to offer Skype to more than 200 million Symbian users globally. This application is usable in Mobile Networks such as GPRS/EDGE/3G and over Wi-Fi also.

Skype users can now make Skype calls, from their Symbian phones, free Skype to Skype calls to any Skype user anywhere in the world. The user can also do Instant Messaging or Chat with another person and even share files. There is even a facility to make low cost International calls/ SMS via Skype Out.

Nokia introduced its first touch screen phone 5800 Xpress music sometime around November 2008. Since then, Nokia has released several other touch screen phones that are based on the S60 OS 5th edition. Now Nokia has announced that its new touch screen phones will be based on S40 OS and will also have dual SIM capability that was already expected by the people. S40 is one of the most popularly used platform worldwide.

Previously Nokia introduced Maps and Life tools for the S40 phones which was very useful. Now the touch screen capability is to be introduced in S40 phones this year and QWERTY keypad and Dual SIM are to implemented in S40 phones Next year. The internet capability will also be enhanced. The price will also be more affordable.

After succeeding with N and E series phone, Nokia have now unveiled its first ‘C’ series phone – Nokia C5 that is expected to be launched by the second quarter of this year. It runs on the S60 3rd edition mobile OS and comes with some exiting new features like:

Built in support for instant messenger
Ability to see friend’s status updates on the contacts section/phone book section
Nice integration with social networking websites
